Muchas gracias, Alton, por esta entrevista, sé que está muy ocupado con sus actuaciones. Alton, ¿cuándo empezó usted a cantar?
Alton Lott: Empecé a cantar cuando tenía 8 años de edad. Mi madre y mi padre hacían 3 programas de radio cada día y cantaban en ellos, me recogían en la escuela para el show del mediodía

He escuchado que le gustaba todo tipo de Música: Hillbilly, Blues, Rock and Roll, R&B,… ¿es correcto?
Alton Lott: Me gusta todo tipo de Música, pero con 15 años en 1955 y escuchando todas aquellas nuevas canciones, bueno, ya sabes que me tenía que gustar toda la Música de los años 50. Nunca olvidaré cuando escuché a Chuck Berry por primera vez, lo mismo que cuando escuché a Bill Haley, Elvis y al resto... era emocionante ser músico en aquella época.

¿Quién le enseñó a tocar la guitarra?
Alton Lott: Mi madre me enseñó a tocar la mandolina porque era pequeña, después continuó con la guitarra.

Alton, ¿podría contarnos sobre su niñez con Jimmy?
Alton Lott: Jimmy y yo nacimos en la misma habitación en la casa de mis abuelos en Hillsboro, Mississippi. Jimmy era unos años más mayor, mi madre y mi padre junto con mi hermano, mi hermana y yo vivimos con mis abuelos en distintas épocas y Jimmy vivía una milla al este de allí. Hacíamos cosas de niños y lo pasábamos muy bien. Esto fue en mi último año del instituto que empezamos a cantar juntos y a escribir canciones

¿Cómo fue su periodo en Ace Records?
Alton Lott: Coincidió con mis días en el instituto, Jimmy y yo conocimos a Johnny Vincent en Jackson y trabajamos media jornada para Johnny. Enviábamos discos a los disc jockeys y material de grabación y aprendimos mucho sobre el negocio de los discos. Mientras estábamos allí escribimos "Got it Made in the Shade" y lo grabamos en New Orleans. También escribí dos canciones para Harry Lee y grabamos todo ello al mismo tiempo.

Huey Piano Smith tocó el piano para un disco suyo de la Ace, ¿qué recuerda sobre él?
Alton Lott: Huey era muy bueno en el teclado, era un buen chico... mientras grabamos en la Ace aquel día, Jimmy Clanton estuvo allí. Y lo pudimos conocer, otra anécdota emocionante,...

Jimmy Clanton es una gran persona. Alton, ¿qué recuerda sobre el Louisiana Hayride?
Alton Lott: Mi último año en el instituto fue en 1958 y en aquel año Jimmy y yo estábamos un día cantando cuando un amigo de mis padres llegó y nos escuchó. Él querñia ser nuestro manager, aceptamos, compró un nuevo Cadillac y nos llevó al Louisiana Hayride. Tuvimos una audición para Tillman Franks, que era el bajo de Johnny Horton y tocamos aquel sábado por la noche.

¿Cómo era Johnny Horton?
Alton Lott: Johnny Horton era el perfecto caballero... vestido como un figurín y cantaba como un pájaro... era Genial!

¿Qué recuerda sobre la Sun Records? ¿Le resultó divertido cantar allí?
Alton Lott: Mientras estábamos en el Louisiana Hayride, Tillman llamó a Sam Phillips a la Sun y nos consiguió un contrato para grabar un disco. ¿Qué podría decir de la Sun que no se haya dicho ya? Era lo máximo a donde se podía llegar, el lugar en donde cualquier persona quisiera grabar un disco... Elvis, Jerry Lee, Johnny Cash, todo el resto, ... menuda lista... simplemente estar en el sello era realmente excitante... Jimmy Van Eaton, Roland Janes, and Billy Riley colaboraron en nuestro disco, jamás olvidaré eso.

Alton, ¿echó de menos a Jimmy cuando se alistó en la Marina?
Alton Lott: Cuando Jimmy nos dejó y se alistó en la Marina yo estaba muy disgustado, quería sacar más discos.siempre pensé en lo que podríamos haber hecho...

Usted actuó en España hace años, ¿le gustó este país? ¿Y Europa?
Alton Lott: He estado dos veces en Europa. Actué en Hemsby y en Benidorm, España. España es tan bonito,... Lo pasé muy bien en Hemsby y en España, la gente era ¡encantadora! y me gustó tocar para ella.

¿Qué planes tiene para el futuro?
Alton Lott: Continúo tocando con una banda en Kansas City y con una banda en Jackson, Mississippi. Damos bastantes conciertos por el Sur y en la zona de Kansas City. Deke Dickerson suele venir a Kansas City y nos reunimos. Es uno de los mejores. He tocado en el Viva Las Vegas Weekend.....I haver tres veces, Green Bay y en la Ponderosa Stomp en New Orlean. He dado conciertos en Memphis y en Jackson,TN. Me siento afortunado en muchos sentidos y me disfruto todavía tocando y cantando. Espero volver a Europa. La banda que tocó conmigo en el Ubangi Stomp en España vendrá a Estados Unidos este verano y esperamos grabar en la Sun y actuar en algunos conciertos.

Alton Lott is one of the artists who recorded at Sun Records in the 50´s with his relative Jimmy. Inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, Alton & Jimmy appeared on the Louisiana Hayride and he is still performing.

Thank you very much Alton, for this interview, I know you are busy performing. Alton, when you started singing?

Alton Lott: I started singing when I was 8 years old. My mom and dad did 3 radio programs each day and I sang with them, they would come and get me out of school for the noon show

I´'ve heard you liked all kind of Music: Hillbilly, Blues, Rock and Roll, R&B,… is that right?

Alton Lott: I like all kinds of music, but becoming 15 in 1955 and hearing all those new songs, well you know that I had to like all the 50s music. I will never forget hearing Chuck Berry for the first time along with Bill Haley, Elvis and all the rest... what a thrill being a musician in that time...

Who did you teach to play guitar?

Alton Lott: My mom got me started playing mandolin because it was small, then later she got me going on guitar.

Alton, can you tell us about your childhood with Jimmy?

Alton Lott: Jimmy and I were born in the same room in my grandfathers house in Hillsboro Mississippi. Jimmy being a few years older, my mom and dad along with myself and my brother and sister would live with my grandparents at different times and Jimmy live a mile east of there....we would do kids stuff and had some great times, it was in my last year of high school that we started singing together and writing songs...

How was your time with Ace Records?

Alton Lott: At that same time of my high school days, Jimmy and I met Johnny Vincent in Jackson and we would work part time for Johnny, we would mail records to disc jockeys and stuff records and learned a lot about the record business. While we were there we wrote Got it Made in the Shade and recorded that in New Orleans. I also wrote 2 songs for Harry Lee and we recorded those at the same time...

Huey Piano Smith played piano for your record on Ace, what do you remember of him?

Alton Lott: Huey was great on the Key boards, nice guy, while we were recording at Ace that day, Jimmy Clanton stopped by, we got to meet him, another thrill...

Jimmy Clanton is a very kind person. Alton, what do you remember about your appearance on Louisiana Hayride?

Alton Lott: My last year in high school was 1958 and in that year Jimmy and I was singing one day and a friend of my parents came by and heard us. He wanted to be our manager....we said yes, he bought a new Caddy and took us to the Lousianna Hayride. We audition for Tillman Franks, who was Johnny Hortons bass player, played that Saturday night...

How was Johnny Horton?

Alton Lott: Johnny Horton was the perfect gentleman, dressed like a million and sang like a bird... he was ¡¡great!!!

What do you remember about Sun Records? Was it fun to record there?

Alton Lott: While we were at the Hayride, Tillman called Sam Phillips at Sun and got us a record contract, what can I say about Sun that hasn't been said already. It was the top of the chart, the place everyone wanted to record. Elvis, Jerry Lee, Johnny Cash, all the rest, what a list.....just to be on that label is a real thrill.....Jimmy Van Eaton, Roland Janes, and Billy Riley plated on our record. I will never forget that....

Did you miss Jimmy when he enlisted in the US Navy?

Alton Lott: When Jimmy left and joined the Navy I was very upset. I wanted us to do some more recording I have always thought about what we could have done....

You were performing in Spain many years ago, did you like Spain? And Europe?

Alton Lott: I have been to Europe twice. I played at Hemsby and at Benidorm Spain. Spain was so beautiful. I had a great time at Hemsby and Spain, the people were GREAT and I loved playing for them...

Are you still touring? What about your future projects?

Alton Lott: I am still playing with a band in Kansas city and with a band in Jackson Mississippi, we do several gigs around the South as well in the Kansas City area. Deke Dickerson comes through Kansas City and I go sit in with him. He is one of the best. I have played the Viva Las Vegas weekender 3 times, Green Bay and the Ponderosa Stomp in New Orleans. I have played shows in Memphis and Jackson TN. I have been blessed in Many ways and I still like playing and singing. I plan to go back to Europe, the band that backed me at the ubangi stomp in Spain are coming to the US this Summer and we plan to do some recording at Sun and play a few gigs...
