"While I am unclear on many details about these photos, I will tell you this photo was taken at the Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport during a Louisiana Hayride show. It's the same time we each had our picture made with Elvis individually...his arm around us!. The person who took the picture was the one who got us backstage to meet Elvis, and I don't remember who that was. I had not met Guy yet, so it was March 10, 1956. Elvis' shirt was pink and black and sweaty because he played his performance with the very same shirt and a jacket. This is me and my friends at the Louisiana Hayride. L. to R. Carol Golemon: Empecé a ir al Louisiana Hayride en 1955 y fue por una razón...Elvis Presley. Era muy emocionante aunque fuera básicamente retransmitido en directo por radio. Ya que nosotros no éramos lo suficientemente mayores para conducir, le pedíamos cada semana a uno de nuestros padres para que nos acompañasen. Mi Padre solía sentarse lejos de nosotros cuando era su turno. A él le gustaba Johnny Cash y él no tenía ni idea de quién era Elvis.
Simpáticas anécdotas. Carol, tomaste excelentes fotografías de prácticamente todos los grandes artistas de los años 50 y las has conservado estos 60 años.
Carol Golemon: Sí, las tomé con una pequeña Brownie Kodak. Ninguno de nosotros valoraba esas fotografías por aquel entonces…las mías estaban todas en una caja de zapatos en la parte de atrás del aire acondicionado del coche. De camino de Shreveport a Houston – con las ventanas bajadas-toda la caja voló a la nueva autopista de East Texas, que estaba llena de señales de ¡No Parar!. Mi tío no quiso parar y mi primo Marty y yo empezamos a llorar y a amenazarlo con saltar del coche, hasta que mi tía les dijo que parase. Corrimos arriba y debajo de la carretera recogiendo las fotografías de Elvis. Probablemente perdimos muchas entonces y otras simplemente las descuidamos.
Tuviste la oportunidad de conocer a Elvis Presley y has tomado una de sus más bellas fotografías, tienes fotografías en donde apareces junto a él, ¿cómo era Elvis? ¿qué sentiste ese día? ¿y cómo era Elvis en el escenario? ¿qué sentías cuando lo veías allí, cantando?
Carol Golemon: Él era sociable, guapo, sexy y divertido. Me siento honrada por haber tomado una de las más bellas fotografías que han sido tomadas a Elvis por una fan, esta fotografía ha sido portada de uno de los libros escritos sobre él. Mis amigas y yo, a los trece o catorce años no estábamos interesadas en el “Hillbilly” así que nos sentábamos en un stand que estaba frente al escenario justo donde se ponía Elvis y solamente me giraba para tomar las fotografías. Crecí amando aquella Música. Cuando empecé a salir con Guy Golemon, íbamos a todo tipo de actuaciones musicales. Mi horizonte musical se expandió considerablemente.
Me preguntaste qué sentí cuando lo ví actuar… bien, ¡puedo definirlo como una experiencia visual!. Después de que Elvis actuase en el Louisiana Hayride no podías escucharle demasiado debido a los gritos de las chicas, incluida yo. Aunque todos nosotros teníamos sus 45's para escucharlos (Sun Records) creo que no tengo palabras para explicar lo que sentí. Y no creo que tenga palabras ahora. Simplemente me encantaba. Eso es todo.

Carol Golemon: Te lo estaba contando el día del cumpleaños de Little Richard. Porque no es algo de lo que hable a diario. Lo que sucede es que tengo un autógrafo de Little Richard, que lo firmó en uno de nuestros bailes del instituto allí en Shreveport, Louisiana fuera de Cross Lake. Dice: “Para una preciosa chica! Little Richard”. Y lo llevo en mi monedero en un bolso cerrado con cremallera. Es bueno ir preparada en este tipo de cosas para una fan. Y esa soy yo. Una fan… un buen miembro del público ¡y la cámara siempre preparada en cada momento! ¡Y lo sigo haciendo!.
Has conocido a Johnny Cash y June Carter, incluso trabajaste para June, ¿cuándo fue eso y cómo eran Johnny y June?
Carol Golemon: Cuando Guy, yo y nuestros dos preciosos hijos, John y Will, nos trasladamos a Tennessee para continuar la carrera de compositor de Guy, nos mudamos de Louisiana a Hendersonville, Tennessee. Yo tenía un trabajo como profesora de cuarto grado y cuando Johnny Cash se casó con June Carter, su hija del matrimonio con Rip Nix, Rosie Nix estaba en mi clase. Carol Golemon: Yo no, pero mi Familia: ¡Música, Música, Música!. Yo soy la oyente. Mi ex marido Guy sigue escribiendo canciones. Mis hijos han estado en dos bandas juntos (Walk the West and The Cactus Brothers) ambas en Capitol Records. Carol Golemon grow up in Shreveport, Louisiana, and she had the chance to enjoy the Louisiana Hayride at its best. Carol met and took awesome Photographs of almost every Legend dealing with Country, Hillbilly, Rhythm & Blues, Rockabilly and Rock and Roll of the 1950´s
Thank you Carol for accepting this invitation to do the interview, when you started going to the Louisiana Hayride?
Carol Golemon: I started going to the Louisiana Hayride in 1955 and I went for one reason...Elvis Presley. It was very exciting even though it was essentially a live radio show. Because we weren't old enough to drive my friends and I begged one of out Dad's each week to drive and chaperone us. My Daddy used to sit far away from us when it was his turn. He liked Johnny Cash and didn't have a clue about the Elvis thing.
Funny anecdotes. You took a lot of wonderful pictures of almost every artist of the 50´s. It is great you kept them for these 60 years.
Carol Golemon: Yes, I had a with a little Brownie Kodak. None of us respected these photos at the time… mine were all in a shoebox in the back of the un-air conditioned car. On our way from Shreveport to Houston - windows down - and the whole box flew out onto the brand new East Texas Freeway with signs posted everywhere...NO STOPPING! My uncle refused to stop and my cousin, Marty and I started crying and threatened to jump out of the car, until my aunt told him to stop. We ran all up & down the road gathering up Elvis photos. Probably lost some then and the others just carelessness.
Carol, you have met Elvis Presley and have taken one of his most popular pictures, you have many pictures being close to him, how he was? what did you feel that day? and how was Elvis on stage? What did you feel when you saw him there, singing...?
Carol Golemon: He was friendly and cute and sexy and funny. I am honored to have "one of the most gorgeous pictures ever taken of Elvis by a fan" be placed on the cover of one of the many books written about him. My friends and I , at thirteen or fourteen years old, were not interested in the "Hillbilly" acts so we sat on a huge speaker placed in front of the stage right where Elvis stood and only turned around to take his picture. I grew to love much of that music in time. When I started dating Guy Golemon, we went to all kinds of musical performances. My musical horizon expanded considerably.
You asked what I felt when I saw him singing...well, it was definitely a visual experience! After Elvis had been on the Hayride for awhile and word spread (we took the message to Byrd High School) you really couldn't hear him so much because of the screaming girls - me included. We had all his 45's to listen to though. (Sun Records) I don't think I had words then for how it felt. I don't think I have words, now. I just loved him. That's all.
I know you have a treasure in your purse, please tell us about it!
Carol Golemon: This is strange. I was telling you this on Little Richard's birthday. Because it's not your normal everyday experience. I happen to have an autograph from Little Richard , which he signed to me at one of our high school dances there in Shreveport, Louisiana out on Cross Lake. It says, "To a very pretty girl! Little Richard." And it Happened to be in my purse in a zip lock bag. Never a dull moment for a music fan. And that would be me. A fan...a really good audience member and camera ready at all times! Still am.
You have met Johnny Cash and June Carter, even you were working for June, when it was? how were them?
Carol Golemon: When Guy and I and our two precious sons ,John and Will, moved to Tennessee to further Guy's songwriting career, we moved from Louisiana to Hendersonville. I got a job teaching 4th grade and when Johnny Cash married June Carter, her daughter from her marriage to Rip Nix, Rosie Nix, was placed in my class. June Carter asked me to tutor Rosie and to stay with her and her sister, Carlene Carter, while she and Johnny did their trips to the Holy Land. She came out to my car bringing $15 and I said "You could've waited until next time, June." She said, "Oh, no, I don't wanta' get so far into you, I can't see my way clear." Imagine that! She was one awesome lady...I never showed her those pictures of her I had taken at the Louisiana Hayride....nor of Johnny.
I went with Rosie to most all of the tapings of The Johnny Cash Show. I sure saw a lot of stars then and met some of them out at the Cash home. June was just delightful. John didn't have much to say. At least not to me. I was lucky once to be in on a "guitar pull" at the Cash's. With Bob Dylan at Johnny's feet and me sitting between Earl Scruggs and Mother Maybelle Carter,& others....
Guy Golemon is a songwriter and singer and your children have a Band, what about you, Carol?
Carol Golemon: Not me, but my family---Music, Music, Music! I am a listener. My ex husband Guy is still writing songs. My sons have been in two bands together (Walk the West and The Cactus Brothers) both on Capital Records. Each one of them has a new project going and you will hear music in whichever house you visit. Come to Nashville and we will show you!
