Be-Bop-A-Lula!: Melody Craddock





Eugene Vincent Craddock, conocido como Gene Vincent, rebelde y sensible, también llamado “The Cat Man”, "The Black Prince” o el "Hamlet del Rock and Roll”, Gene es una de las más apreciadas Leyendas del Rock and Roll de todos los tiempos. Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps grabaron innumerables Himnos como "Blue Jean Bop”, "Who Slapped John?”, “Say Mama”, "Dance to the Bop," "Lotta Lovin´”, "Baby Blue”, y, por supuesto, “Be-Bop-A-Lula”. Gene Vincent fue íntimo amigo de Eddie Cochran. Ofreció giras por todo el mundo. The Beatles, que siempre le admiraron, llegaron a ser sus teloneros. Gene Vincent apareció en películas como “The Girl Can´t Help it” (1958) y “Hot Rod” (1958). Vincent fue inducido al Rock and Roll Hall of Fame y al Rockabilly Hall of Fame en 1998

A: Muchas gracias, Melody, por esta entrevista, significa mucho para mí, puesto que tu padre es uno de mis cantantes preferidos. ¿cómo era Gene como padre? ¿cómo era su personalidad?
Melody Craddock: Era un padre muy cariñoso, el tiempo que pasaba con él. Su personalidad, era siempre muy bromista.

A:  ¿Recuerdas alguna anécdota en especial que quieras compartir con nosotros?
Melody Craddock: … recuerdo que cuando mi Madre cantaba “these tights with ruffels on the backside” mi Padre la cantaba de este modo “ruffels on her butt shes mine”.

A:  ¡Sí era simpático! ¿Qué comentaba sobre Eddie Cochran?
Melody Craddock: Eddie era como un hermano para mi Padre, estaban muy unidos.

A: ¿Afectó a la carrera de Gene la pérdida de Eddie?
Melody Craddock: Creo que cuando Eddie falleció, una parte de mi Padre falleció con él.

A:  ¿Cómo fue su vida durante el periodo que estuvo en la Marina?
Melody Craddock: Sé que era muy joven cuando estuvo alistado.


A:  ¿Qué Música le influenció a Gene cuando era un niño o adolescente?
Melody Craddock: Mi Padre cantaba mucha Música Gospel en la iglesia.

A:  Se dice que Gene se hirió la pierna cuando se involucró en un accidente de moto, ¿es eso cierto o fue cuando estuvo en Korea?
Melody Craddock: Ocurrió en un accidente de moto.

A:  Existen versiones de cómo surgió la canción “Be-Bop-A-Lula” ¿cuál es la real? (Un dibujo de Comic llamada Little Lu-lu , Gene y Shreiff Tex la escribieron juntos o la escribió Gene, …)
Melody Craddock: Mi Padre escribió Be-Bop-A-Lula mientras se encontraba en el hospital, habla de Little Lu-lu.

A:  ¿Cómo se sentía Gene con los fans de Europa?
Melody Craddock: A mi Padre le encantaba Europa, de hecho, él vivió allí algunas temporadas y sé que hacía algunos programas de radio allí.

A:  ¿Cómo era su relación con algunos grupos Europeos como The Beatles?
Melody Craddock: Wow, The Beatles fue la banda que tocó para mi Padre un año antes de que vinieran a los Estados Unidos, en Hamburgo, en 1962. The Silver Beatles se llamaban entonces.

A:  Muchas gracias, Melody, nos encanta Gene y siempre mantendremos viva la memoria de Gene Vincent.

Gene Vincent became Eddie Cochran´s close friend. He toured around the World. The Beatles, who always admired him, became his supporting band. Gene Vincent appeared in movies like "The Girl Can´t Help It" (1958) and "Hot Rod" (1958). Vincent was inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Rockabilly Hall of Fame in 1998

A: Thank you very much Melody for this interview, it means a lot to me, Gene Vincent is one of my favourite singers. How was Gene as father? How was his personality?
Melody Craddock: He was a very loving father, the times we spent with him. His personality, he was always a jokester.

A: Do you remember any special anecdote with him you want to share with us?
Melody Craddock: My Mom would but these tights with ruffels on the backside, and my dad would sing ruffels on her butt she´s mine.

A:  ¡He was funny! What did he think about Eddie Cochran and how was his relation with him?
Melody Craddock: Eddie was like a brother to my Dad they were very close.

A:  Did Eddie´s lost affected Gene´s career in any way?
Melody Craddock: I believe when Eddie died a piece of my Dad died with him.

A:  How was his life during his time in the Navy?
Melody Craddock: I know he was young when he went into the Navy.

A: What music did Gene influence when he was a child or teenager?
Melody Craddock: My Dad sang a lot of gospel music in church.

A:  It is said Gene hurt his leg when he was involved in a motorcycle accident, is that true or he got his leg injury while on active duty in Korea?
Melody Craddock: He was in a motorcycle accident.

A:  There are many versions of how Be Bop a Lula came to be, what is the real one? (A comic strip called Little Lulu, Gene and Sheriff Tex wrote the song together, Gene wrote it entirely on his own,… )
Melody Craddock: Dad wrote Be-Bop-A-Lula while he was in the hospital, and it was about Little Lu-lu.

A:  How did Gene feel with European Fans?
Melody Craddock: My Dad loved Europe, in fact he lived there for periods at a time, I know he has done many radio programs there.

A:  How was his relation with European Bands like The Beatles?
Melody Craddock: WOW the Beatles they were a back up band for my Dad a year before they came to the U.S., in Hamburg in 1962. The Silver Beatles back then.

1st february 1960 : the Beat Show tour starts in Glasgow, and will last eight weeks, through Scotland and England. Larry Parnes organized the whole thing. Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran are accompanied by M

arty Wilde’s Wild Cats (with Georgie Fame) and the Four Beat Boys. Vince Eager, Billy Fury and Joe Brown star in the first part. In Scotland, Billy Raymond, the Viscounts, Sally Kelly, the Tony Sheridan Trio and George Fame are also part of the show.
