WDIA ~ Memphis This photo is from WDIA the the oldest (1948) African American RADIO STATION in the nation . I was brought up listening to this station. It was very informational to its listeners. Being 50,000 watts it carried a long ways over the mid-south and a lot of people heard it. WDIA use to have two benefit shows they sponsored a year in Memphis with hottest entertainers of that day the Starlight Revue held in early July to benefit the "WDIA Baseball League" "The Goodwill Revue" it was held in mid-November, to benefit "The Goodwill Home for Boys and Girls". WDIA also sponsored bus transportation to and from Keel Ave. School, a school for kids with special needs. Mr. Ford Nelson is the only pictured DJ still living and he can be heard on WDIA on Sundays. WDIA's programs were off the hook, and a lot of program they did in that day, they are now doing them on TV now, programs like "Quiz'm on the Air" and talent search programs. WDIA's programs today is mostly talk and good and clean singing music but back in the day the programing had another format. It had more variety. A lot more need and can be said about WDIA.
