Berman Patterson: El nombre lo cambiamos despuės de que el grupo evolucionase. Sentíamos que el nombre sería musicalmente más impactante. Mi hermana Joan y yo elegimos el nombre.

¿Por quė "Gee" de The Crows fue importante para The Cleftones?
Berman Patterson: Nos preguntaron si queríamos actuar para la campaña que uno de los estudiantes estaba organizando para ser Presidente de la
asamblea de estudiantes. Seleccionamos 'Gee' de The Crows porque era popular en ese momento y tenía una buena armonía. Cambiamos las letras para que tuviesen sentido en dicho evento. A consecuencia de ello, el candidato ganó.
¿Por quė se deshizo el grupo en 1964?

and Patterson wrote "You Baby You," which became a hit in 1955. The Cleftones reached #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with
"Heart and Soul," a rearrangement of a 1938 song of the same name. The Cleftones had been made a
part of the upcoming Alan Freed Easter Show and they performed at Apollo Theater many times in 1956. In the same year, they became part of the "Top Record Stars Show Of 1956". Today Berman Patterson, original member of The Cleftones will talk about his career.
Thank you Berman, I'm a big fan of The Cleftones and many of your songs are part of the soundtrack of my life. What was your first group?
Berman Patterson: My first & only group was The Cleftones. We formulated while attending Jamaica High School in 1955.
Why did you change the name of the group from The Silverstones to The Cleftones in 1955?
Berman Patterson: The name changed came after developing the group. Felt the name was more musically representative. My sister Joan& I came up with the name.
Why was "Gee" by The Crows important for The Cleftones?
Berman Patterson: We were asked to perform for the campaign of one of the students who was running for President of the student government. We selected 'Gee'by the Crows because it was popular at the time & had good harmony. We changed the lyrics to fit the occasion. Subsequently our candidate won.

Why did you break up in 1964?
Berman Patterson: I stopped performing with the group in 1961, which time I was drafted into the U.S. Army. P. S. We did regroup as the original group again in the early 70's.
One of my last shows was The PBS Special TV show in the late nineties.
How many songs did you write?
Berman Patterson: I wrote our first hit 'You Baby You',also 'I was Dreaming','Happy Memories' & 'Why you do me like you do'.
How many of the current members are original ones?
Berman Patterson: Currently the only original performing at this point in time is Herb Cox.All of the original 'Cleftones' are alive and well except our bass singer Warren Corbin who passed away way too soon.
What is your favourite memories being with the other members in the 50´s?
Berman Patterson: One of my favorite memories was touring in 1955 with Chuck Berry& many of the stars at that time.also a show we did in Detroit with Della Reese. I'am sure there are many more I've forgotten.
Have you ever thought about writing a book?
Berman Patterson: No,however Herb is in the process of doing so.
Are you still performing? what are your future plans?
Berman Patterson: I am now totally retired living in South Florida,playing a little golf. I recorded two indie CD's of popular standard songs which you can access by just googling my name. I performed that music in & around South Florida for a few years before total retirement.
