Bobby Brooks Wilson: Reet Petite

 Jackie Wilson fue un cantante americano. Está considerado como uno de los artistas más dinámicos y que más han influído en la historia del R&B y del Rock and Roll.  Logró la popularidad en sus primeros años (1953-1958) como miembro del grupo vocal de R&B  Billy Ward and His Dominoes, convirtiéndose en artista en solitario desde 1957,dejando un legado de unos 50 hit singles de R&B, Doo Wop,  Pop, Soul. Fue merecidamente apodado Mr.Excitement, ya que sus espectáculos eran emocionantes y sabía como ganarse al público. Wilson era capaz de bailar con un estilo único y a la vez cantar sin que le supusiera un esfuerzo, estaba dotado de una tremenda agilidad y utilizaba una impecable vestimenta.

"Reet Petite", quizá su más recordado éxito, fue grabado en 1957, llegó a ser un modesto éxito de R&B, y años más tarde, un enorme éxito a nivel mundial.  

Su personal estilo en el escenario inspiró a Elvis Presley, a James Brown y a Michael Jackson  entre otros grandes artistas. Jackie Wilson y Elvis Presley sentían mutuo respeto y admiración y llegaron a ser grandes amigos.  Michael Jackson homenajeó a Jackie Wilson en los Premios Grammy de 1984, dedicándole a Jackie Wilson el Grammy por el Album del Año, Thriller, pronunciando estas palabras: “En el negocio de la música, hay líderes y hay seguidores. Y solamente quiero decir que creo que Jackie Wilson era un maravilloso artista ... te quiero y te doy las gracias".

Wilson fue inducido al Rock and Roll Hall of Fame en 1987. El 17 de agosto de 2013, en Cleveland, Ohio, fue inducido al The Official R&B Music Hall of Fame.

Su hijo, Bobby Brooks Wilson, nos hablará hoy de la carrera de Jackie Wilson y sobre la suya propia, como imitador de su padre.

Muchas gracias por concederme esta entrevista, Bobby. ¿Cómo influenció a tu padre el hecho de vivir en  Detroit?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Yo no crecí cerca de mi padre, por lo que la mayor parte de las respuestas que te daré serán referencias al libro biográfico sobre Jackie Wilson, llamado "Jackie Wilson, The Man, The Mob, The Music" y  "Lonely Teardrops, The Jackie Wilson Story", ambos fueron escritos por   Tony Douglas de Melbourne, Australia.
Jackie Wilson fue un niño bastante salvaje en su juventud, su madre tenía varios empleos y su padre   Jack Leroy Wison Sr. paseaba por las calles de Detroit, la mayoría de las veces empujando un carrito de la compra y una guitarra. Jackie pasaba mucho tiempo en la calle, con una banda callejera local llamada los Shakers.  
Cantaba en las esquinas con su banda y bebía vino a la temprana edad de nueve años, entrando y saliendo de los juzgados juveniles y de la cárcel cuando tan solo era un niño. Su madre Eliza se dió cuenta de que era un gran cantante y Jack a menudo imitaba a su madre y cantaba con ella, aunque su trabajo no le permitía estar demasiado tiempo con Jack.

¿Por qué a Jackie le empezó a mostrar interés por el boxeo?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Su héroe era Joe Louis y no había demasiados en aquellos tiempos en Detroit. Jack era ágil y atlético, cualidades que hacían que pudiera ser un buen boxeador. Muchos de sus amigos también boxeaban, como Berry Gordy Jr. y otros amigos de su infancia. Un modo de darles prestigio. Una manera de evadirse de la vida que tenían en Detroit.

¿Por qué Jackie dejó el boxeo y cuándo empezó a trabajar en el negocio de la música?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Aunque era un gran boxeador y ganó un Guante de Oro, era exagerado, ya que él era un peso ligero y era vencido. Su madre se dió cuenta de ello y dicen que lo sacó del gimnasio ¡por la oreja!.
También se dice que él y Berry Gordy iban un día caminando a sus casas después de un par de  asaltos en el gimnasio, cuando vieron una fotografía de Lionel Hampton, en donde parecía muy joven a los 50 años. Y pensaron que quizá el boxeo no fuera lo suyo.

¿Quiénes eran los cantantes favoritos de tu padre?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Mario Lanza yAl Jolson.

¿Cuándo y cómo conoció a  Billy Ward?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Lo que se dice es que Billy estaba buscando a alguien que sustituyera al cantante principal, Clyde McPhatter.
De modo que todos los chicos fueron a la audición incluidos muchos chicos a los que Jack consideraba rivales. Gente como Hank Ballard y Chuck Jackson.

¿Qué te comentaba tu padre acerca de la música RNB en los años 50?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Desafortunadamente no conocí a mi padre. En la época en la que supe que era mi padre, habían pasado mucho años desde que había fallecido.

¿Qué significó para Jackie reemplazar a Clyde McPhatter en 1953 y unirse a The Dominoes?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Significó un mundo para él porque él se consideraba cantante solamente. Tuvo trabajos como en  la fábrica de automóviles  y del estilo, pero a menudo los dejaba porque sentía que estaba hecho para ser un reconocido cantante,  teniendo en cuenta que el hecho de estar casado desde los 16 años y cuidar a su primer hijo Jack Leroy Wilson III hizo la situación más difícil.

¿Por qué Jackie firmó un contrato para ser cantante en solitario en 1957, dejando a The Dominoes?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Se quiso probar a sí mismo como líder del grupo cuando el tema "Saint Teresa of the Roses" ocupaba los números más altos de las listas de radio y eran grandes ventas para   The Dominoes y Decca Records estaba buscando un artista de color joven para su nuevo sello  Brunswick!.

¿Es cierto que Elvis ayudó a Jackie pagando las facturas del hospital cuando Jackie estuvo en coma?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Efectivamente, Elvis pagó más de 250.000 dólares por los gastos médicos de mi padre.

Tu voz y apariencia se parecen mucho a las de tu padre, he leído que mucha gente piensa que eres Jackie cuando actúas, ¿cuándo empezaste a cantar y cuáles son sus proyectos futuros?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Empecé a cantar después de pasar 8 años en la Marina de los Estados Unidos, antes de dejar la Marina, cantaba  en bares de karaoke con amigos, fue entonces cuando me ofrecieron un trabajo en un Grupo de Doo Wop en Hawaii llamado The Love Notes. Peter Hernández, de Brooklyn, NewYork trasladó este grupo a Hawaii y estuvieron allí 14 años antes de que yo fuera un miembro. Su hijo Bruno de seis años hacía un show imitando a un pequeño Elvis. Ahora es la estrella del Pop Bruno Mars.

Tengo un CD de éxitos que acaba de salir, llamado  "It's About Time" Bobby Brooks Wilson con éxitos de los   Adult Contemporary Charts.
"I Get The Sweetest Feeling" y "I Can't Love You Anymore", ambos alcanzaron el número 10 en las listas y fueron editados para la radio en mi propia version del éxito de mi Padre  "Your Love Is Lifting Me Higher" para la radio el viernes pasado.
Espero continuar viajando por el mundo, manteniendo el Legado de mi padre vivo, y promocionando su música y la mia.

Jackie Wilson    was an American singer and performer.   He was considered a master showman, and one of the most dynamic and influential   performers in R&B and Rock 'n' Roll history.  Gaining fame in his early years (1953-1958) as a member of the R&B vocal group Billy Ward and His Dominoes,he went solo in 1957 and recorded over 50 hit singles that spanned R&B, pop, soul, doo-wop and easy listening.  He was called Mr. Excitement rightfuly so, his show appearences were electrifying he knew how to work the audiences, Wilson  could dance and at the same time singeffortlessly and he had tremendous agility and impeccable dress.

"Reet Petite" recorded in 1957 became a modest R&B success (and many years later, a huge international smash).

His stagecraft in his live shows inspired Elvis Presley, James Brown and Michael Jackson among ahost of other artists.  Jackie Wilson and  Elvis Presley had a mutual respectfor each other's music and they became good friends. Michael Jackson honored Jackie Wilson at the 1984 Grammy Awards. Jackson dedicated his Album of theYear Grammy for Thriller to Wilson, saying, "In the entertainment business, there are leaders and there are followers. And I just want to say that I think Jackie Wilson was a wonderful entertainer...I love you and thank you so much."

Wilson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. On August 17, 2013 in Cleveland, Ohio Jackie Wilson was inducted into The Official R&B Music Hall of Fame.

His son, Bobby Brooks Wilson, would like to talk about his father´s career and his own career as a Jackie Wilson´s impersonator

How did living in Detroit influence Jackie?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: I was not raised with my father so my  answers to most of your questions will be in reference from the book Bio of Jackie Wilson called "Jackie Wilson, The Man, The Mob, The Music" and "LonelyTeardrops, The Jackie Wilson Story", both which were written by Tony Douglas of Melbourne, Australia. Jackie Wilson was a sort of wild child in his youth with his mother working various jobs and his Father Jack Leroy Wison Sr. walking the streets of Detroit mostly as a drunk pushing a shopping cart and guitar. Jack was on his own running the streets with a local street gang called the Shakers.
He would sing on the street corners with his gang and drink wine as early as age nine and be in and out of Juvenile Court and jail much of his childhood. His mother Eliza was noted as a great singer and Jack would often copy her and sing with herbut she worked much leaving Jack to his own will.

What caused Jackie to be interested in boxing?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: His hero was Joe Louis and they didn't have many in the early days of Detroit. Jack was quick and athletic which gave him a good chance to make it as a boxer. Many of his friends boxed as well such as Berry Gordy Jr. and many ofhis childhood buddies. It was a way they thought to stardom. A way out of the life they had in Detroit!

Why did Jackie give up boxing and when did he start in the music business?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Although it was noted he was a great boxer and a Golden Glove Winner,it was a little over the top because he was such a light weight he would often get knocked out. His mother caught wind of him boxing and it was told she dragged him out of the gym by his ear!.
Also noted he and Berry Gordy was walking home after a couple of losing rounds to the gym when they spotted a picture of Lionel Hampton looking quite young and handsome at 50.They decided maybe boxing wasn't for them.

Who was your fathers favorite singers and or band influences?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Mario Lanza and Al Jolson.

When and how did he get to meet  Billy Ward?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Word on the street was Billy was looking to replace his lead singer, Clyde McPhatter.
So all the kids went for theaudition including a lot of the kids that Jack considered his rivalry. People like Hank Ballard and Chuck Jackson.

What did your father tell you about RNB in the 50s’?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: Unfortunately I didn't get to meet my father. By the time I realize I was related he had pass several years.

What did it mean to Jackie to replace Clyde McPhatter in 1953 to join The Dominoes?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: It meant the world to him because he didn't see himself as nothing more than a singer. He tried jobs as a worker at the auto plant and such but would often quit feeling he was made for stardom as a singer, which made it hard on him as married at 16 years old to take care of his first child Jack Leroy Wilson the III.

Why did Jackie sign a solo contract in 1957, leaving The Dominoes?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: He proves himself as a leader on the group when the song " Saint Teresa of the Roses" Charted high on radio and sales for The Dominoes and Decca Records was looking for young Black artist for its new label Brunswick!

Did Elvis help pay Jackie´s hospital costs when he slip into a coma?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: It was notes Elvis paid more than 250,000 for my fathers medical expenses.

Your voice and appearance looks much like your father, I have read that many people thought that you were Jackie, when did you start singing and what are your future projects?
Bobby Brooks Wilson: I started singing after an 8 year run in the US Navy, waiting for my discharge I found myself singing in the Karoake bars with friends when I was offered a job on the Doo Woop Group in Hawaii called The Love Notes. Peter Hernandez, from Brooklyn NY moved his group to Hawaii and had been there 14 years before I joined.
His son Bruno age 6 was playing Baby Elvis in the show. He is now Pop Star Bruno Mars.

I have a hit CD out now called "It's About Time" Bobby Brooks Wilson with hits on the Adult Contemporary Charts.
"I Get The Sweetest Feeling" and "I Can't Love You Anymore" both peak #10 on the charts and just released to radio my version of my Dads big hit "Your Love Is Lifting Me Higher" to radio last Friday.
I hope to continue traveling the world keeping my fathers Legacy alive as well as promoting his and my music!
