Yanina Horton: Johnny and Billie Jean

Billie Jean and Johnny Horton

Incluso compusieron juntos la canción "The Girl in Saskatoon".
Mi padre adoraba a Johnny Cash.

This is made at the BMI awards in Nashville Tn. in the fall of 1959. Springtime In Alaska and The Battle of New Orleans were up for awards. Tillman and Virginia Franks are at left

Yanina Horton: Gracias a tí.

A: Thank you for this interview, Yanina. You must have a lot of interesting stories to tell. You were surrounded by so many outstanding artists! First of all, how was Johnny Horton as a father?
Yanina Horton: I loved my daddy's ways! He was a kind and loving father and husband! He was a great storyteller and very wise.

A: I've read that he was an incredible athletic talent and he loved playing basketball, do you know why he didn't carry on as a career after having many offers by different teams?
Yanina Horton: That's right!. Daddy mainly wanted to fish. He wanted to be a fisherman and his bait shop. He loved basketball but he loved fishing and music as well.

A: In 1949 your father went to Alaska to become a fisherman, what made him go back to Texas?
Yanina Horton: While in Alaska, my father learnt to sing and improved playing guitar. He performed on Cliffie's Stones Hometown Jamboree Show on WLAC'TV in Los Angeles. He went back to Texas to try a career as a musician. Once there, he entered a talent contest at the Reo Palm Isle Club in Longview. The contest was hosted by Jim Reeves. Reeves was unknown back then, he worked as a DJ at KSIJ in nearby Gladewater. My father won that contest and many others.

December 21, 1955

A: Did your father write his own songs?
Yanina Horton: Yes, his mother taught him to play guitar at age 11. After graduating high school, my daddy was about to join a ministry but he left the seminary and moved to Alaska to become a fisherman. He began writing many songs in Alaska.

A: The semi-folk saga songs were very popular as "The Battle of New Orleans" and "Sink the Bismark." His "North to Alaska" was the theme of a John Wayne movie. Why was he so interested in history?
Yanina Horton: He liked to read a lot, so probably that's the reason

A: During 1952, Hank Williams rejoined the cast of the Hayride and became a kind of mentor for Johnny Horton. Can you tell us about their relationship?
Yanina Horton: My daddy while still almost an unknown, had met and befriended Hank Williams. My mother doesnt talk much about that subject.

Billie Jean Horton won the Miss Bell South contest in Nashville mid-1952. She was a telephone operator back then.

A: Where and how did your father meet your mother Billy Jean, who was married Hank Williams back then?
Yanina Horton: My daddy and mama meet at the Hayride by Faron Young, who was my mama's boyfriend back then. My parents got married on September 1953.

Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash and Faron Young

A: It is very well known that Johnny Cash and your father were close friends. They even wrote together the song "The Girl in Saskatoon". Robert Hilburn says in his book Johnny Cash The Life, that Cash liked your father much because Johnny Horton was not as ambitious as him, he never judged others behaviour and he was very spiritual. What do you think about this? How was his relationship with Cash and what did he think about him?
Yanina Horton: They were close friends and his death hit Johnny Cash very hard. Uncle Johnny was right. Daddy and Uncle Johnny were like brothers. My daddy loved Johnny Cash! They enjoyed each other's company. They lived to fish together, talking about music, business etc. Cash admired my daddy not only as a musician, but a good friend who understood him. Uncle Johnny loved to listen his theories about afterlife and reincarnation.

A: Johnny Horton had an exact premonition about his death the day he died in 1960. What do you know about this? Did you or your mother know any more premonitions that came true?
Yanina Horton: I knew that he always knew things before they happened. He told my family he was going to die. I remember the last time I saw him, he told us he wasn't going to come back. And that he loved me! Also for me to take care of my family. He said that they were going to need me! He had premonitions and he gave them to me.

A: Did your father tell Cash to take care of you and your family?
Yanina Horton: Yes, daddy and Uncle Johnny had an agreement that they would take care of the others family.

1959, probably at DJ Convention in Nashville, Tennessee

A: How was Johnny Cash as a Godfather?
Yanina Horton: Johnny Cash was a wonderful Godfather, he was very caring. Johnny Cash promised him to take care of his family if something would happen. He was a true friend. He was very protective, as well. If anyone wanted access to my mama, they knew they had to talk with Johnny Cash. He wanted to marry my mama but he took pills and she didn't like that.

A: Billie Jean Horton, your mother, was married for three months to Hank Williams before Johnny Horton. Could you tell us what Billie Jean remembered about him?
Yanina Horton: Hank knew Johnny very well. Hank was a fan of Johnny's music. Anyway, Mother doesn't talk about Hank to us. We never ask.

A: Your mother was a singer, her record "Ocean of Tears" hitting the country top 40 in 1961. Could you tell us about her career from the 70's on?
Yanina Horton: Mama just stopped singing, she kept daddy's music alive and raised us girls.

A: Is your mother still living in Louisiana?
Yanina Horton: Yes, she still lives in Shreveport.

A: What do you think about the 2015 movie about Hank Williams "I Saw The Light"? What do you think about it?
Yanina Horton: We watched some scenes and we liked them, Tom Hiddleston and Maddy Hasson were great, but I think it would be better if it would be focused much more on Hank's career.

A: How do you keep your father's legacy alive? Do you think he should be inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame?
Yanina Horton: We are very disappointed that Johnny Horton was never named to the Country Music Hall of Fame. His contribution to Country, Rock and Roll and Pop music was huge. Mother had kept our daddy's music alive and we still do. And she had three young daughters to take care of by herself. She had no one else and she did a wonderful job. We love her very much. I talk about my daddy on Social Media, many people ask me things, they are very interested about him and his career. I even send them pictures and I get to know some very interesting people.

Horton signed songwriting contract for 4 songs while with Abott Records in 1951

A: And finally, what about you? Have you focused your activity in the music business?
Yanina Horton: I have no desired to be a musician. I am happy here as I am. I'm sixty one and just too old to try and my mama still needs me.

A: Thank you very much Yanina, it was very interesting. I wish you good luck and I hope Johnny Horton is inducted into the CMHF.
